Low-seeded watermelons

The agricultural products market in Russia has entered a period of change. According to experts from the Ministry of Health and Rosstat, the deficit in melon crop consumption in 2021 amounted to about 200,000 tons in just the ten largest cities of Russia. This deficit is gradually shrinking, primarily in cities with populations over a million, which significantly impacts the consumption structure of watermelons and melons. The consumption of large watermelons (weighing 10-12 kg) of the "Crimson Sweet" variety is decreasing in favor of medium and small-sized watermelons. The main reasons for this are smaller family sizes and the high cost of the product.

The shortage of medium-sized and portioned watermelons with high consumer qualities, especially in taste, drives higher demand and relatively high prices for such products. On the other hand, strong competition in the large watermelon segment of the "Crimson Sweet" variety makes it less profitable each year.

In Europe, North, and South America, the transition to portioned watermelons has mostly been completed. Foreign producers, primarily from China and Central Asia, are starting to pay attention to the Russian market to sell their products. Over the next 2-3 years, as international trade connections disrupted by the pandemic recover, a wave of cheaper portioned watermelons is expected to flood the market.

In essence, Russian producers have three to four seasons left to master the production and sale of portioned products while their profitability is still high. In 4-5 years, having portioned watermelons in the production range will no longer be a matter of generating high profits, but a condition for surviving in the market.

Hybrid medium-sized and portioned watermelons from JSEEDS LTD. meet the highest standards of the Japanese domestic market. Their main features include almost 100% fruit uniformity, impeccable appearance, and excellent taste qualities. One of the key areas of focus for Japanese breeders is developing hybrids in the L1 (less seeded) segment—diploid watermelons bred through traditional selection methods, containing 30-50% fewer seeds compared to traditional varieties and hybrids.
